A great aunt is widowed and getting on in years. Sometimes she talks about the same minor concerns over and over. It dawned on me that just listening to her with interest and patience is an act of kindness. When she tells the same joke repeatedly, I try not to remind her that she has told it many times before. I attempt to show interest. After all, I am interested in her – her chosen topic really doesn't matter. It's the relationship that matters.
